A guide to Castelnaud la Chapelle
The lovely Castelnaud la Chapelle lies approximately 5 kilometres from Les Milandes and offers several things to do in the Dordogne.
Located at the confluence of the Dordogne and Céou Rivers, the village offers direct access to a tranquil and peaceful spot on the Dordogne River. Here you can hire a canoe for a leisurely glide on the water and enjoy the fabulous vistas.
Château de Castelnaud
Castelnaud la Chapelle is home to the medieval fortress of Château de Castelnaud which appears to emerge from the rock at the top of the hill. It was founded in the 12th century and was fought over by the English and French for many years. Indeed, during the Hundred Years’ War the English occupied Château de Castelnaud while the French dug in at the Château de Beynac across the river.
There are many sights and activities at the imposing château which will appeal to visitors of all ages. Among these is the Museum of Medieval Weapons. This was added in the mid 1980s and features some incredible armour and weaponry.
The château has recently undergone refurbishment works to the roof which you can read about in our previous blog.

A spot of lunch…
When staying at Les Milandes we often eat at Brasserie La Plage, located at the bottom of the hill from the château in a small village square. The café provides outside seating in a buzzy and informal environment. We have enjoyed a coffee and croissant for breakfast at this honest and friendly café as well as a good value lunch and dinner.
The Périgord region is well known for its consumption of duck. This is celebrated on the menu which features many local specialities including Confit de Canard (duck confit), Magret de Canard (duck breast) and Salad Périgourdine (includes foie gras) as well as a variety of other dishes and pizzas, and reasonably priced carafes of local wine. Be sure to leave room for the indulgent ice cream sundaes on offer!
The square also offers provides a butcher, a bakery with delicious freshly baked breads and sweet, intricate patisserie delicacies and a small convenience store for groceries. There is ample parking.
