Places to eat in the Dordogne near Les Milandes

27 March 2014

Places to eat in the Dordogne near Les MilandesĀ are numerous and below is a selection to give you a taste of the area. They are in order of the closest at the top. Many of them are traditional in their menus with foie gras and duck the main specialities of the region.

LE PARC DES MILANDES – 0553 304242
A few minutes from the house, the Parc is in a wonderful setting and you can sit by the river and enjoy a beer or glass of wine. It changed hands last year and we have not eaten there since but unless it’s changed, the food is adequate if you want somewhere convenient to eat.

THE CAFE AT CASTELNAUD – 0553 294087 – 5 minutes drive
This is our local cafe which we love. The food is simple, but it’s honest, good and you look up at the wonderful sight of the Chateau above you with the river meandering by on the other side. It’s not going to gain a Michelin star but is convenient and friendly.

LA BELLE ETOILE – Roque Gageac – 0553 295144 – 10 mins
We think one of the best value restaurants in the area. We’re always very well looked after and Regis and his kitchen brigade are diligent and good at what they do. Probably best to book if you want to go on a Friday or Saturday in mid summer. Try and book a table on the terrace outside nearest the road which overlooks the river.

LA PLUME D’OIE – Roque Gageac – 0553 295705 – 10 mins
Food is very good although it can sometimes be closed during the season – worth ringing to confirm. Just along the road from the Belle Etoile overlooking the river.

LES PRES GAILLARDOU – Roque Gageac – 0553 596789 – 12 mins
In the next village from Roque Gageac, again good value French food.

LE PETIT PARIS – Daglan – 0553 284110 – 15/20 minutes drive
Well worth a visit in the square of this very pretty village. Excellent food with a slight north African twist and excellent foie gras done various ways. Also, extensive and reasonably priced wine list with good house wine.

HOTEL D’ESPLANADE – Domme – 0553 283141 – 15/20 mins
The views alone make this a worthwhile venue but the food is also very good although expensive. It also happens to be in one the prettiest villages in France so do allow time for a stroll.

CABANOIX ET CHATAIGNES – Domme – 0553 310711 15/20 mins
Just down the hill from L’ Esplanade, this is cosy and good value.

LE ST MARTIAL – St Martial de Nabirat – 0553 291834 -25/30 mins.
Well worth the drive. Modern take on local produce, good fish and very professional.

LE GRAND BLEU – Sarlat – 0553 310848 – 20 mins.
Michelin starred and the best on Trip Advisor, it takes itself quite seriously but is very good.

LE BISTRO DE L’OCTROI – Sarlat – 0553 308340 – 20 mins.
Good value, reliable and used by locals which is important in Sarlat.

LE PETIT MANOIR – Sarlat – 0553 298214 – 2o mins. Characterful owner and Thai influence of his wife is reflected in the food. Very pretty courtyard in the middle of Sarlat.

LE BISTRO EN FACE – Tremolat – 0553 228069 – 40 mins.
One of the best! Always consistent with varied menus and great chips and mousse au chocolat (not at the same time!)

LE VIEUX LOGIS – Tremolat – 0553 228006 – 40 mins.
The more serious owner of the Bistro en Face. Excellent but tres expensive – lovely for those special occasions!

LE CHATEAU DES MERLES – Mouleydier – 0553 631342 – 45 mins.
Great place for a stop on either way to the airport. Featured in Mr & Mrs Smith, it is trendy, with good food and a lovely courtyard.
